I think the finest vintage to date from this estate, the 2020 Château Faugères has some similarities to the 2016, but with a touch more density and depth. Incredible aromatics of cassis, ripe cherries, leather, and graphite, full-bodied richness, a deep, layered mouthfeel, riveting purity of fruit, and beautiful tannins all define this sensational Saint-Emilion. It's a rich, powerful, inward 2020 (which is the vintage) and needs another 3-5 years of bottle age, but this is one well worth seeking out.

A dark and deeply saturated hue in the glass, with an inky black tulip core, and a rich, black cherry rim, all de rigueur for vintage and château. It suggests a rich and concentrated style, and the nose clearly intends to come good on this promise, throwing out scents of baked black cherry, black bean, soot, rose petal tobacco, violets and plum cream. This creamed suggestion takes solid form on the palate, which has a velvety yet elegantly seamless character, carrying darkly grilled plums and violet cream, scented with sooty charcoal, verbena, orange zest, coffee bean, dark chocolate and toast. As you might imagine the tannins here are fairly robust, with a firm grip becoming apparent through the middle of the palate, and dominating the finish. This has real interest, and although displaying a huge structure there is freshness and fruit to match. It will be a wine to lay down for a decade, at the very least. Excellent, and a top-performing St Emilion at this level. The declared alcohol here is 14.5%. Two separate samples tasted.

Yet, it is balanced by its freshness, lift and elegance that makes everything work here from start to the vibrant, cocoa, plum and spice-box infused finish.

Intense purple colour with violet hue and black core. Opulent and aromatic nose reminiscent of blackberries, crème de cassis, with strawberries, mild spices and dark chocolate. On the palate rich yet elegant character with good tension, well balanced wth a juicy fruit, ripe tannins and elegant acidity. Fruit lingering in the aftertaste, convincing length and aromatic depth.

The 2020 Faugeres from Saint Emilion has a deep garnet-purple color. It requires some patient swirling to unlock scents of tar, forest floor, wet slate, and garrigue, before opening out to a fragrant core of baked plums and boysenberry preserves, with a waft of Indian spices. The full-bodied palate is ripe, concentrated, and fantastically bright, with unbelievable tension and freshness lifting the concentrated flavors to a very long, velvety finish.

Red berries, plums and flowers with hints of orange peel. Full-bodied with rich fruit, light jam, creamy tannins and brightness at the end. Lightly salty. Vivid. 70% merlot, 25% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon.

Falstaff

Smells of plum, dark chocolate and rum balls (Rumkugeln). Hints of roasted red chilli pepper and liquorice. Lively and fresh on the palate, ripe with clear fruit and some graphite. Fine-grained but easily perceptible tannins. Long finish.
