Dark ruby garnet, good depth, purple reflections, delicate brightening of the edges. Nuances of liquorice, cassis and blackberry jam underlaid with fine precious wood spice, a hint of lime, mineral, delicate tobacco touch. Complex, full-bodied, firm texture, dark cherries, well-embedded, sustaining tannins, dark-spicy, stylistically referring to St.-Estèphe, shows good length, a robust, multi-faceted food companion, still has a lot to do.

The nose is elegant, racy, fresh and offers power, deepness as well as harmony. It reveals notes of cassis, liquoriceand small notes of small bright wild black berries associated with small touches of raspberry, Sichuan pepper, violet as well as a discreet hint of camphor and spices. The palate is elegat, delicate, silky and offers power (full of control and delicacy), a certain concentration and a beautifully preserved fruit. On the palate this wine expresses notes of bright cassis, bright cherryand small notes of plum associated with small touches of violet, rose, bright garriguette strawberry as well as hints of black tea, liquorice, a very discreet hint of tobacco and toasted. Good length. Tannins are elegant, fine and supple. An imperceptible hint of crushed almond in the finish/persistence.

The 2018 Haut-Bages Libéral is super-impressive right out of the gate. It shows all the depth and intensity I saw from barrel, with maybe a bit more tannic impact. Ripe red cherry, plum, orange peel, cedar and sweet spice all build in the glass. The 2018 is going to need a few years to come into its own, but it is a gorgeous Pauillac. 94+

Medium/full-bodied, bright, lifted layers of sweet, juicy red currants pop up on the nose along with tobacco, cedar, cigar box and a light hint of oak. There is a brightness to the fruit in the mouth, chewy tannins and a crispness to the red berries that carries through from start to finish.

Decanter

A more unfussy than slick wine, less sumptuous than some as is often the case with this estate, but as you sit with it you start to realise there’s real quality here. It has a juiciness and integrity to the cassis and bilberry fruit, alongside brambles and hedgerows, with chewy tannins that build slowly through the palate providing a welcoming cushion of support.
