Når Vinum kalder Prieuré-Lichine 2017 for en Margaux med "excellent ageing potential", rammer de plet. For efter næsten 10 års nænsom lagring leverer denne 1855 Grand Cru Classé et historisk højdepunkt – og det endda i en undervurderet årgang!

Prieuré-Lichine 2017 er et levende bevis på, at selv i mere udfordrede årgange kan der skabes vine med både elegance, dybde og klassisk Margaux-karakter, når alle kvalitetsparametre fra mark til kælder optimeres. 

Slottet, som oprindeligt blev grundlagt som et munkekloster, har gennemgået en markant modernisering i det nye årtusinde. Hver enkelt parcel vinificeres nu separat, hvilket giver stjerneønologen Stéphane Derenoncourt optimale muligheder for at skræddersy det endelige blend.

Resultatet? En vin med præcision, finesse og en silkeblød struktur – og samtidig med en imponerende lagringsevne. ADVARSEL – mængderne er begrænsede, og de her flasker forsvinder hurtigt!

“This is the definition of a wine to buy in an off-vintage. It has the signature of the last few years, but in an early-drinking package. It's a little oaky and smoky for sure, but handles it well and delivers punch and personality without overstating the case. Ripe damson fruits help to deliver impact, even if the fruit is generally a touch below the exuberance of the last two years. Planted in the vineyard to 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot.”

“The nose is fruity, racy and offers a fine power and finesse of the grain. It reveals notes of wild blackberry, wild raspberry and small notes of blackcurrant associated with fine touches of violet, lily as well as very fine hints of small berries and discreet hints of Cuben pepper/spices. The mouth is fruity, well-balanced and offers a good definition, gourmandize, fat, suavity and a fine tension. On the palate this wine expresses notes of ripe/juicy red cherry, ripe/juicy wild strawberry and small notes of blackberry associated with fine touches of violet as well as fine hints of tonka bean, racy minerality, nutmeg and small notes of graphite, tobacco and mocha. Tannins are elegant and well-built.”

Light in structure compared to the previous two years, but there is so much pleasure and balance on display, and it will be great to drink pretty much from now. Smudges of aniseed, fennel and liqourice adds depth, freshness and lift on the finish. Frost impacted the first wine for the first time for decades in 2017, which affected viticultural choices for the rest of the year and needed skilful winemaking to tease out the identity of the Margaux appellation. 37hl/h yield, 50% new oak. Det tidligere munkekloster Ch. Prieuré-Lichine ligger i Margaux på den venstre bred i Bordeaux. I 1952 blev slottet købt af Alexis Lichine, der i tråd med traditionen navngav slottet efter sig selv, men lod det første navn stå for at ære fortidens hårdtarbejdende munke. På grund af dårlig økonomi og generel forsømmelse talte vinmarkerne ikke mere end 7 hektar og blev solgt for en slik. Men Lichine var visionær for sin tid. Han formåede at vende udviklingen og forøgede beplantningerne til 65 hektar. Demonstrativt plantede han et stort skilt ved motorvejen D2 for at tiltrække turister - et træk, der ikke var videre populært blandt naboerne, da man ikke var vant til turister i Bordeaux dengang.

Senere overtog sønnen Sacha Lichine arbejdet med den kendte Michel Rolland ved roret som ønolog. I 1999 blev slottet solgt til Ballande-gruppen, en succesfuld négociant i Bordeaux, og Stéphane Derenoncourt fungerer nu som førende ønolog. Ballande-gruppen har fortsat genrejsningen af slottet med reduktion af høstudbyttet for at øge kvaliteten, nye metoder til beskæring og en omfattende modernisering af faciliteterne. Kvaliteten er i dag højere end nogensinde før.
