OMG. This is really the most amazing young Taylor's I have ever tasted. Full-bodied and lightly sweet with super power and intensity. So racy and focused. Yet this has such muscle and intensity. Needs at least eight years to show you everything it has to offer.

Taylor’s Vintage Port 2016 – Vibrant purples and inky blacks here. Bruised plum edges. This is ripe and generous, plush. The amazing purity and pristine fruit of the 2016s is all too evident here. Christmas cake and plum pudding. Cloves, blackberries, lovely soft kid leather, tobacco leaf, and quality dark chocolate. Exuberance but all in balance, this is seamless with micro-fine tannins, which are almost invisible. Still so young. There is good spirit, again in balance. Nothing is so much as an eyelash out of place. Elegance, purity, and incredible length with the intensity maintained throughout this ever-so-long finish. It has the length of a great Rutherglen muscat. Timeless. Tasted several times, and each time it just blew me away. After earlier tastings, my thoughts were “If young vintage Port can be better than this, I can’t imagine how. It has some serious competition, but it is my wine of the vintage.” No reason to feel any differently now. 100.

This is packed with raspberry, blackberry and blueberry fruit flavors that play off one another, melding with anise, fruitcake and ganache notes. A warm tarry edge coats the finish, revealing an echo of bramble. A seriously grippy, strapping Port, this revels in its power. Best from 2032 through 2055. 6,200 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.
Gismondi on Wine
As you might expect, weather plays a big part in what is a splendid year for vintage port. A rare wet spring and cool weather recharged the drought-stricken soil, reduced yields and lengthened the growing season into the cooler fall months. The first grapes picked at Quinta de Vargellas arrived at the winery on 17th of September, with the Pinhão Valley estates following on the 23rd and 26th respectively. The colour is opaque. Lovely pure fruit with perfect acidity and bones all in the elegantly restrained Taylor style. A sure sign of an extraordinary wine is you can drink this now or put it away forty years and beyond. Young collectors can be assured this wine will be with them their entire lives.
Falstaff
Deep dark ruby garnet, purple reflections, very DELICATE brightening to the rim. Ripe blackberry fruit, fine nougat, DELICATE dried fruit, mint, fine tobacco nuances. Taut, tightly meshed, fine chocolate touch, ripe, supporting tannins, elegant texture, very complex and great persistence, as if from a single mold, almost dry in the finish, an aristocratic style, Vintage Port at its best, excellent ageing potential, a wine full of noble restraint.
Wine Enthusiast
Ripe, structured while also fruity, this intense, perfumed Port is opulent while also elegant. Its tannins and great fruit are finely integrated and are rich with potential. Black fruits, berries and a juicy aftertaste add freshness to the wine.
Vinous
In 2016 Taylor's began picking in Vargellas on 17 September, followed by Pinhão Valley estate on 23 and 26 September. The 2016 Vintage Port has an aristocratic bouquet with tight wound aromas of blackberry, bilberry, crushed stone, black olive and a light, marine-tinged element, perhaps almost peat-like. The palate is just beautiful with fine, chiseled tannins and a perfect line of acidity. There is that almost "arching" structure one always seeks in a great Taylor’s with a gentle but insistent grip towards the finish. It is everything you really want from a Vintage Port. Production is 6,200 cases.
Revista Adega, Melhor Vinho
Still very youthful. Exuberant, rich and opulent, with an abundance of cassis and plums accompanied by floral notes and sweet spices. Pure and highly precise, reminiscent of the 2007 at the same stage, but offering greater depth and persistence. It has everything it needs to improve considerably over the coming years.
Robert Parker
The 2016 Vintage Port was aged for 20 months in wood and comes in with 102 grams of residual sugar. When last seen, this was a fine Taylor's, not my favorite, perhaps, but very fine. It is a little precocious in this elegant year, which is not to say there isn't a tannic backbone. Also, this did have a few hours in the glass. Still, the first and last impression is the big, beautiful fruit. It is a delicious Taylor's that is hard to resist. It also is firm on the finish and likely to evolve well. Complexity will come in time. I don't see any reason to change anything about my original evaluation just now. This is still too young to show much development.
Decanter
Dense and heady on the nose with an attractive green, leafy edge. Sweet and pump on the palate with lovely bright cherry and damson fruit – nicely defined but not as big as some. Firm, tight-knit tannins on a long, linear finish which shows off the lovely purity of fruit. 6,500 cases in total.
Bob Campbell
Dense, intense wine with bright plum, dark berry fruit, subtle floral (lavender?) and spice flavours. Good acidity and sinewy tannins provide a solid backbone that will no doubt allow the wine to develop magnificently in bottle. A classic Taylor's style - elegant and steely.
Jancis Robinson
Two main sources are Quinta de Vargellas, which is north-facing and so protected from excessive heat, and giving floral notes, plus Quinta de Terra Feita and Quinta do Junco around Pinhão for earthier characteristics. Only 6,500 cases were made, instead of the usual 12,000–14,000.
Dark crimson but without the blueish purple of the Grahams. Tight, refined nose – rather claret-like. Not as obviously sweet as some. Restrained aromatically: backward with sharp, linear blackcurrant and violet notes. This tastes like a somewhat shouty, scratchy baby at the moment – which is no criticism of a wine designed to age as long as a vintage port. But then there are masses of sweet fruit with liquorice surrounded in a scratchy skein of tannins and acidity. Jancis Robinson
